The sunshine has arrived.. yippee!!!! The first must-do is a visit to the seaside 😎.
Yummy scrummy ice creams, soft talc-like sand and blistering sun.
So, the reality up here in Scotland is the sun is shy....only puts his hat on occasionally. Those glittering seas are baltic and who can still remember the pain from the removal of sand between your toes? I mean, did mums get lessons on that rubbing!!! 🤣
But what a treat it was to visit those iconic seaside towns...Burntisland (Sunday-school trip: brown bag lunch) Aberdour, Ayr (Butlin's) and Largs (Nardini's Ice Cream). It was truly exotic to travel south to Filey, Scarborough and Blackpool (the mecca of all seasides)
The Excitement...
Train/bus trips - travel took ages. We had no car..
It sea was never cold to us kids...no wet suits for us!
We tried to dig in the sand to Australia...
Where were the toilets on the beach? ....😝
Let us see those family seaside pictures!!
Then the fun fair...or as us Scots call them "The Shows". The smell of candy floss (not so many hamburger carts in those days) and the rickety sounds of wooden rides whirling around. But the highlight of the trip was the 'Pokey Hat" ..especially with raspberry sauce.
What's a "Pokey Hat"?..well, in Scotland (mostly in the west) it was the name for an ice cream cone. Turn it upside down (not when it is full with ice cream) and it looks like a pointed hat🧙♀️🤣
Family snap time: From left - right...Me coming 2nd at fancy dress at Butlin's, outside Beachcomber Bar Butlin's (remember the tropical storms?) and finally mum and me on the dodgems at Burntisland. Funnily, I lived opposite this area 40 years later...spot the curls!!
